Home Safety 101
-
Identify potential problems. Survey your home
and take note of any problem areas. These could include a
bathroom floor that doubles as a slippery slide after a hot
shower, a dimly lit stairway, loose carpeting and tile or an
overflowing bookcase that isn't anchored properly. If you're in
serious doubt about things you know little about (like wiring for
example), have a professional come in to give you an expert
opinion.
-
Make a list. Write down what needs to be done.
Then divide the list between what you can do and what you'll need
help with.
-
Prioritize your to-dos. Give top priority to
those things that will put family members at immediate risk. Also
pay special attention to potential hazards to young, elderly or
handicapped family members and visitors.
-
Fire protection. Anything that could be a fire
hazard needs immediate attention. Read our fire prevention tips for
more information.
Simple steps to safety
- Install Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters wherever water is
present.
- In damp areas, replace metal wall plates and switches with
plastic plates and mounting screws.
- Close off unused electrical receptacles with plain plastic
inserts.
- Secure all carpeting - even curled corners that may seem
out of the way.
- Put non-slip mats under throw and area rugs that lay on
polished or tiled floors.
- Secure your bathtub with adhesive non-slip strips or a rubber
mat.
- For all stairways, install non-slip material on every
step.
- Ensure all stairways have handrails or a banister.
- Light up dimly lit areas such as hallways and stairways.
- When they're on the stove, keep pot handles turned in and out
of a child's reach.
- Clearly mark all poisonous substances and keep out of reach
of children.
- Install shatter-resistant glass on tub/shower
enclosures.
- Ensure all outdoor steps, porches and decks have
railings.
- Adjust your automatic garage door opener's stop/reverse
sensitivity so that a child cannot be trapped under it.
