Security Primer

Installing a home security system will not only give you peace of mind, it may also entitle you to a discount on your property insurance. But while there isn't one sure-fire thief-proof security system, you can combine a number of solutions to lower your odds of falling victim to theft.

Neighbourly Advice

Get to know your neighbours so they can recognize any strangers who may be lurking outside your home.
Build good relationships with neighbours - the best surveillance crew available.
Leave a spare key with a trusted neighbour rather than hiding it somewhere on your property.
Let your trusted neighbours or family know when you'll be away on vacation or business.

Your Home's Exterior

Add exterior lighting to ensure your home is well lit at night.
Trim any hedges or shrubs so that your home is in clear view.
Bolt air conditioners down to prevent theft.

Doors and Hardware

Install deadbolts with a 2.5cm throw (or bolt) on all exterior doors.
Ensure the screws used to secure the lock reach halfway through solid doors and coat the screws with glue before driving them into the door.
If you're installing an extra surface-type lock, make sure it's at least 25cm above your door's lockset.
If your keys have been lost or stolen, immediately replace your locks or have them re-keyed.
Secure patio doors so that they can't be lifted out of their tracks. You can purchase a ready-made security product or drop bar, or fit a length of wood in the channel of the sliding panel.
Use sliding bolts, cane bolts or padlocks on your garage and/or shed door.

Windows

Lock windows at ground level and those that are reachable via a roof.
Install bars or grilles to secure basement windows.
Secure a double-hung window by fastening the top sash with angle brackets and cut a rod to fit between the bottom sash and the top jamb. You can also install a pin that locks the meeting rails together or install window key locks that allow you to open the window without activating the lock.

Identify Your Belongings

Engrave your licence plate on portable items such as your television, video and computer equipment. Also keep note of all available serial numbers.
Make an inventory of your home's contents. Complement your written list with photos or a video/DVD. Remember to keep this list up to date, store it in your safety deposit box and keep a copy with a trusted friend or family member.
